Just a reminder that this month’s Virtual Tour of the Mohawk Institute Residential School will be happening tonight at 7PM. Your donation will help support virtual programming at the Woodland Cultural Centre and ensure that we can continue to deliver the highest quality programs centered on a Hodinohsho:ni worldview, celebrating, and sharing Indigenous cultures, languages, and art.⁠

The Virtual Tour, created with Thru the Reddoor, will feature a full tour of the former Mohawk Institute Residential School, along with interviews with five Survivors of the Mohawk Institute. ⁠

In June, Powers Workers’ Union generously donate

In June, Powers Workers’ Union generously donated $40,000 to the Woodland Cultural Centre to support the Centre’s programming, museum, and building maintenance. ⁠

We are honoured to have had the opportunity to work with PWU and their Indigenous Relations Committee on their fundraiser and host them on site for a powerful and emotional day. Nya:węh go:wah for your passion and dedication to supporting WCC! ⁠

PWU planned a Reconciliation Honour Walk with their staff to get involved. The objective of this walk was to honour the victims and survivors of the Residential School System while raising money for awareness and education in the name of reconciliation. Due to Covid-19, participants walked individually and logged their distance on the Reconciliation Honour Walk website. ⁠

The goal was to walk a cumulative total of 600 kilometres in honour of the number of kilometres Chanie Wenjack endeavoured to complete when he escaped from the Cecilia Jeffrey Residential School. ⁠

Did you know the Rotinonhsón:ni Confederacy is the oldest living democracy system in the world, and within it, men and women have equal voices? ⁠
⁠
When it was illegal for women to vote, suffragists looked to Rotinonhsón:ni women for inspiration. They saw that Rotinonhsón:ni women had rights to their children, the ability to own land, and autonomy over their own bodies. They were respected as sacred creators of life and protectors of the land. Whereas in Western society, religion forced women to live under the authority of their husbands and didn't allow them independence or an equal voice.⁠
⁠
Within the Rotinonhsón:ni Confederacy, women had full and equal participation in governance and were involved in all major decision-making. They also controlled the economy, as they were responsible for the growth and distribution of food, and they were the ones to make decisions regarding the land. Clan mothers held the responsibility of standing up to chiefs and taking away their titles if they were not fulfilling their duties. They even decided when to send men off to war.⁠
⁠
Suffragists’ vision of equality within Western society and government was very much influenced and built from Rotinonhsón:ni women’s longstanding importance and role within the Confederacy.⁠

We’re showcasing Alanis Obomsawin, an Abenaki American Canadian filmmaker, singer, artist, and activist primarily known for her documentary films.⁠

We will be discussing the highly acclaimed Indigenous director and her storytelling style after the film screening. This is an event you won't want to miss!⁠

Tickets are free with a suggested $5 donation to the Art department so we can continue to provide virtual programming.⁠

HAPPENING TONIGHT! Join WCC for the closing of the

HAPPENING TONIGHT! Join WCC for the closing of the Sense of Belonging: A Place Called Home exhibition. Come celebrate Rosalie Favell, Alex Jacobs-Blum, and Shelby Lisk, three contemporary Indigenous lens-based women artists whose artistic practice weaved painting, beadwork, and photography to connect the notion of identity, family, community, and land.

This event is free to attend with a suggested $5 donation to help support future exhibitions and the curation work of the Arts Department at Woodland Cultural Centre.

We hope to see you tonight at 6pm for an evening of Indigenous art!
