The Iroquois people, also known as the Haudenosaunee or "People of the Longhouse," have a sophisticated and deeply meaningful clan system that plays a central role in their social structure, governance, and cultural practices. The clan system is based on a profound connection to the natural world, where each clan is represented by an animal or symbol that reflects specific qualities and responsibilities.The Structure of the Iroquois Clan System:The clan system is matrilineal, meaning that lineage and identity are passed down through the mother. Each person belongs to their mother's clan. The clans are organized into several groups, each with a distinct function within the community. The Iroquois Confederacy, which consists of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca nations (with the Tuscarora joining later), has a variety of clans, with each nation having its own set.
