We are excited to partner with Brantford Native Housing, BRISC, De dwa da dehs nye>s Aboriginal Health Services, Child and Family Services of Grand Erie, and Niwasa Kendaaswin Teg to bring you this wonderful event.

Come enjoy an afternoon of storytelling, hoop dancing, singing, drumming, and delicious food as we bring our community together.

The Woodland Cultural Centre mourns the passing of beloved John Robert Elliott, affectionately known as “Dub” and “the Runner” who passed away on January 30, 2025 at the age of 88. John attended the former Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School from 1947-1952 and became a powerful advocate for survivors. His courageous voice and the stories he shared had a profound impact on everyone he encountered, reminding us all of the importance of preserving history. While supporting the Centre for the Save the Evidence campaign, John said, “Everybody has a plaque, but not everybody has a building,” highlighting the significance of saving the evidence of this dark part of Canadian history. His spirit was truly resilient; every Christmas, despite any punishments, he would run away, driven by a yearning for freedom. Our Executive Director, Heather George, writes, "John was like a grandfather to so many of us. He brought care, love, and joy to all of the Woodland staff, and he always had a kind word to say about our work. John would pop by to visit us and pick up orange T-shirts for his presentations at schools. It was really important to him to make sure that the coming generations learned about the history of Residential Schools. We will all miss that twinkle in his eye as he told a joke and the warmth and meaning he brought to our work."
