Emily Pauline Johnson, born on March 10, 1861, and passing just before her 53rd birthday on March 7, 1913, was an influential writer, poet, and entertainer. The daughter of Mohawk Chief George Johnson and Emily Howells, E. Pauline Johnson proudly celebrated her Hodinohsho:ni heritage through her poetry, most famously in "The Song My Paddle Sings."During her career she adopted her grandfather’s traditional name, Tekahionwake (double wampum) as her stage name. She captivated audiences with her performances while making significant contributions to Indigenous and Canadian literature. Today, she is recognized as a Person of National Historic Significance, with her childhood home honoured as a National Historic Site and museum.After retiring in Vancouver, she continued to challenge societal norms regarding race and gender as a successful, unmarried Indigenous woman.
