Indigenous Art 2025: 50th Annual Juried Exhibition

June 21, 2025 – September 30, 2025

The 50th Annual Indigenous Art Juried Exhibition at Woodland Cultural Centre is a celebration and significant milestone. Since its inception in 1975, the exhibition has been a platform for Indigenous artists to present their work in a gallery setting, challenge colonial narratives, engage in visual experimentation, and affirm their sense of self.

As one of the longest-running Indigenous art exhibitions in Canada, evolving from Indian Art, to First Nations Art and finally Indigenous Art. This legacy is linked to artistic contributions within a global context, having featured several notable Indigenous artists in the past. The Indigenous Art 50th Year Anniversary exhibition reflects on this powerful history while also continues to shape the future of art. Organized around eight thematic components, this year’s exhibition brings together emerging, mid-career, and established artists speaking to memory, land, kinship, joy and more.

We invited three creatives from diverse disciplines and perspectives to join the jury in reviewing the submissions. The jury included Jody Martin (Mohawk, Six Nations of the Grand River Territory), a stained glass artist and community advocate; Mikinaak Migwans (Anishinaabe, Wiikwemikoong Unceded Territory), an interdisciplinary artist, curator, and Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, and Curator of Indigenous Art in the Art Museum at the University of Toronto; and Brenda Mitten (Seneca, Six Nations of the Grand River Territory), a photographic artist and co-founder of the Native Indian/Inuit Photographers’ Association (NIIPA). Together, they undertook the challenging task of reviewing over 200 submissions and narrowing them down to 65 selected works. Every submission was exceptionally strong, and final decisions often came down to splitting hairs. The jurors approached the process with a deep care, insight, and respect for the artists’ work.

As an additional offering to the juried exhibition, a two-person exhibition titled Tending to the Seeds honours the artistic practices of Patricia Deadman and Thomas V. Hill. Both were prolific figures whose work as curators and artists helped shape the current landscape of contemporary Indigenous art. Over the years, they uplifted countless Indigenous artists, and this exhibition offers the recognition and appreciation they so greatly deserve.
