Join the Woodland Cultural Centre for a screening of our new film Silent No More: A Virtual Tour of the Former Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School in a city near you! Come celebrate National Indigenous History Month with WCC.

The former Mohawk Institute Residential School (Mush Hole) was the longest operating residential school in Canada. A building created to destroy Indigenous identity and heritage is now the home of the Woodland Cultural Centre, a site dedicated to the revitalization of Hodinohsho:ni cultures and languages.

This Film is rated PG-13, parents strongly cautioned. Some material may not be suited for children under age 13 (verbal descriptions of violence and sexual assault towards children).

Woodland Cultural Centre is hosting a History & Culture Fair on Thursday May 9 from 11am to 4pm in our Orientation Room to showcase our programming, events, and exhibitions.
Community Awareness showcases all of what Six Nations has to offer and is a time to come together as a community to eat, have fun, and catch up after the long winter months.

The event will include free self-guided tours of the museum, a scavenger hunt game through the museum, BBQ lunch, free swag and goodies, and the opportunity for community members to come out to meet with Woodland Cultural Centre staff and see what we have to offer! ⁠

Ganęhsgwao:ta’go:wah is the word we use in the Cayuga language for the month of April. It refers to the frogs' voices becoming louder during this time of year. If you live near a pond or body of water, it's very noticeable how loud they can get.

Our Language Centre is dedicated to strengthening, revitalizing, and maintaining First Nations Languages, locally, regionally, and nationally. The Language Department has been instrumental in a massive effort to revitalize languages at all levels in the community, including immersion schools and grassroots language programs in our support communities, and across the Hodinohsho:ni Confederacy.⁠

Our Executive Director, Heather George, wanted you

Our Executive Director, Heather George, wanted you to know in addition to your donations helping to support language revitalization, education programming, contemporary art exhibitions and the preservation of the former Mohawk Institute – your donations also help us save important historical documents and belongings (artifacts) such as this scrap book.

This scrap book was kept by Augusta Gilkison, daughter of Col. Gilkison who was the Indian Agent assigned to Six Nations of the Grand River from 1862-1891. It captures an important time of external pressures and internal changes in Six Nations. The book includes news clippings and documents about the First World War, the Six Nations Council House, the Agricultural Society, the opening of the Mississaugas of the Credit Council House, Joseph Brant’s monument unveiling, commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the War of 1812 and various events and gatherings in the community.

As the backing paper is made from wood pulp it is very acidic and starting to crumble. Our plans for the scrapbook include digitizing the pages to allow increased access and when funds allow, we will undertake full conservation and stabilization of the pages.
