GivingTuesday is Tuesday December 3rd, and the Woodland Cultural Centre is asking you to help us raise $15,000 for the reopening of the former Mohawk Institute Residential School as an Interpretive Historic Site and Educational Resource.

The Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School, which operated in Brantford, Ontario, from 1828 to 1970, played a significant role in the assimilation of First Nations children, severing cultural continuity. After closing, it reopened as the Woodland Cultural Centre (WCC) in 1972, dedicated to preserving and promoting First Nations heritage. As one of the few remaining Residential School buildings in Canada, the Mohawk Institute stands as a testament to the tragic legacy of the residential school system.

Since restoration began in 2016, the Institute has transformed from a condemned structure into a symbol of resilience and hope, thanks to the efforts of WCC staff, Survivors, Six Nations leaders, and generous community support. The former Mohawk Institute is poised to become a vital platform for truth-telling, healing, and reconciliation, and the WCC is committed to fostering understanding through exhibitions, community engagement, and educational programming.

We are thrilled to announce that for the fifth consecutive year, The Dufresne-Ray Family Fund at Hamilton Community Foundation has pledged to match the first $5,000 in donations received on Giving Tuesday, amplifying the impact of your generosity!

As we work towards a public reopening in 2025, we face unforeseen financial challenges.
