Curious about the education at the former Mohawk Institute Residential School?A question that our Education Department receives frequently during virtual tours is "what school subjects were the children taught?"This question can be difficult to answer because the education changed with each Headmaster. In 1837 under direction from newly appointed headmaster, Rev. Abraham Nelles, the Mohawk Institute school curriculum was confined to reading in the Bible, writing, and arithmetic. Compared to 1922 under headmaster Ann Boyce, the boys were being taught to repair, build and upholster furniture and overhaul machinery. Other school subjects like Art and gym were added in the 1940’s/50’s. Email tours@woodlandculturalcentre.ca to book a private tour with our Education team!
