October 16th at 6:00PM, Woodland will be offering a virtual showing of our comprehensive Truth and Reconciliation Presentation. This presentation covers topics from the Imperial context, Canada’s Indigenous Policy, the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). ⁠

Emily Pauline Johnson, born on March 10, 1861, and

Emily Pauline Johnson, born on March 10, 1861, and passing just before her 53rd birthday on March 7, 1913, was an influential writer, poet, and entertainer. The daughter of Mohawk Chief George Johnson and Emily Howells, E. Pauline Johnson proudly celebrated her Hodinohsho:ni heritage through her poetry, most famously in "The Song My Paddle Sings."

During her career she adopted her grandfather’s traditional name, Tekahionwake (double wampum) as her stage name. She captivated audiences with her performances while making significant contributions to Indigenous and Canadian literature. Today, she is recognized as a Person of National Historic Significance, with her childhood home honoured as a National Historic Site and museum.

After retiring in Vancouver, she continued to challenge societal norms regarding race and gender as a successful, unmarried Indigenous woman. Her impactful work resonated with both critics and fans during her lifetime, and a monument in Stanley Park honours her legacy.

Woodland Cultural Centre will be closed today, Monday October 14, 2024, due to the holiday.

Under the direction of the Executive Director and working closely with Capital Campaign Committee Co-chairs, the Capital Campaign Coordinator assumes the responsibilities for keeping the campaign on schedule and progressing with a high level of visibility and momentum that engenders a sense of excitement, optimism and confidence in achieving the campaign goal. This is a contract with an anticipated end date of April 30, 2025.

Stock is running low on some boards from the Skateboard Project 2024! Shop now while supplies last!

The Skateboard Project is an initiative that aims to promote Onkwehón:we artwork, active bodies, and collaboration between cultural centers across multiple Indigenous communities.

This year artists from Wahta, Kenhtè:ke, Ahkwesáhsne, Kanehsatà:ke, and Kahnawà:ke created six skateboard graphics showcasing the range of styles and cultural imagery.

We are sold out of board from Kanenrahtanó:ron Cook and running low on boards from Takahawi Beauvais and Erin Strength.
