The Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School, which operated from 1828 to 1970, played a devastating role in the assimilation of First Nations children, severing cultural ties for generations. After closing, it reopened as the Woodland Cultural Centre in 1972, dedicated to preserving First Nations heritage and serving as a testament to resilience. Since 2016, we've transformed this historic site from a condemned building into a symbol of hope and healing. The former Mohawk Institute is poised to become a vital platform for truth-telling and education, honouring the strength of Indigenous children.
