Language Centre Assistant (Summer Student)

Duration: May 12, 2025 – August 29, 2025 (16 weeks)
Hours: 35 hours per week
Rate of Pay: $19/hr (7 hours per day, 5 days per week) some evenings/weekends

About the Woodland Cultural Centre
The Woodland Cultural Centre (WCC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and education of Indigenous cultures and languages. The Woodland Cultural Centre serves to preserve, promote and strengthen Indigenous language, culture, art and history; bringing the story of the Hodinohsho:ni people of the Eastern Woodlands to life through innovative exhibitions and programs.
Job Duties:
- Assist the Language Department with inventory, data-entry, and cataloging
- Assist the Language Manager with the organization and set-up of the Language Centre
- Help create language focused merchandise for sale at events and in the gift shop
- Adhering to the guidelines set out for the Sacred and Sensitive Materials held at WCC
- Follow all Woodland Personnel Policies, and Museum Policies
- Interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner
Qualifications:
Candidate must possess the following:
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work with the public, including weekend events as required
- Ability to work as a team as well as independently
- Ability to move and carry boxes of archival materials including books and audio files (up to 25 lbs)
- Standard computer skills – email, scanning and saving documents, various online programs, etc.
The following are not required but would be assets for the role:
- Ability to speak, write, and understand any Haudenosaunee language
- Knowledge of Longhouse Protocols, Speeches, and Haudenosaunee cultural practices, including Ganǫhǫnyǫhk, Gei: Niyoihwa:ge:, and Gaihwi:yo
- The knowledge to differentiate and distinguish between different Longhouse Speeches and Ceremonies in Cayuga with limited support
- Experience digitizing audio-visual analog materials such as cassette tapes
- Experience working with archival materials
- Experience with Audacity, PastPerfect Museum Software, Adobe Create Cloud Suite, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Teams
- Understanding of Haudenosaunee cultural history and current issues
- Research skills
Please Note:
- This is not a remote position
- The chosen candidate can expect to be onsite for the duration of the contract.
- This position will be working within the former Mohawk Institute Residential School building, including the archival space in the basement. Due to the sensitive nature of the space, some applicants may feel uncomfortable. Candidates selected for an interview will be given a tour of the archival space to ensure they will be able to
work in the building.

Job Purpose:
Under the direction of the Library & Archives Coordinator, assumes responsibility for the organizing of the library’s vertical files, cataloguing and processing materials related to the history, language, artistic practices and teachings of the Haudenosaunee culture and other First Nations of North America.
Job Duties:
The Library Assistant is responsible for working within the strategic operations of the Woodland Cultural Centre Research Library. This includes:
- Assist with organizing the library’s vertical files
- Catalogue library materials on the WCC online catalogue
- Process library materials for public access
- Assist with set up of library for Mohawk Institute museum opening
- Networking, partnerships, collaboration – Work with other WCC departments and researchers
Qualifications
- Possess knowledge and understanding of Indigenous people, their culture, history andtraditions, especially in Ontario
- Detail oriented
- Effective verbal and listening communication skills
- Able to work as a team as well as independently
- Time management skills and completion of assigned tasks
- Library experience not necessary but is an asset
Please Note:
- Physical Requirements: The Library Assistant position is primarily office work, however there are times when heavy lifting is required. This would be in the range of boxes of books that would be 25lbs or less

The Ǫgwehǫweh/Onkwehonweh Programming & Outreach Coordinator will report directly to the Language & Cultural Coordinator.
Job Duties:
- Develop and oversee the creation of language resource material and programs in the six languages of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy working alongside the Language Department Manager.
- Consultation with Woodland’s support communities Six Nations of the Grand River, Wahta Mohawks and Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte with programming and resource sharing or development.
- Coordinate and/or edit video recordings of the first language speakers in the Six Nations community.
- Support the building of resources in the Cayuga and Mohawk languages that will assist teachers in using the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) assessment tools.
- Assist in the establishment of the Dwadwenaga:dat Language Centre and the management of the Longhouse-based collections as a resource for Longhouse Speakers.
- Work with Faithkeepers, community members, staff, and visitors to ensure appropriate access to the language recordings and resources in the Dwadwenaga:dat Language Centre.
Qualifications
- An in-depth knowledge of Longhouse Protocols, Speeches, and Haudenosaunee cultural practices, including Ganǫhǫnyǫhk, Gei: Niyoihwa:ge:, and Gaihwi:yo.
- Be orally proficient and literate in at least one Ǫgwehǫ:weh language, as the collection is centered around oral recordings in the Cayuga and Onondaga languages.
- Have a basic knowledge of language learning methodologies and linguistics.
- Experience in language leadership, teaching, project coordination, and program development.
- Ability to develop and implement community collaborations.
- The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

- Experience with Audacity, PastPerfect Museum Software, Adobe Create Cloud Suite, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Teams are considered assets
- Effective verbal and listening communication skills in English and Cayuga or other Hodinohsoni language
- Familiar with both Mac & PC operating systems, or willing to learn
- Time management skills, and completion of assigned projects
- Able to work as a team as well as independently

Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager of Education, the Cultural Interpreter will assume the responsibility for leading guided tours of the Woodland Cultural Centre’s Museum and the Mohawk Institute Residential School. The chosen candidate will present in-person and virtual tours, workshops and educational programs, to k-12 school groups, community organizations, corporate organizations, individuals and other groups. The candidate will also be conducting research related to education programming, assist in creation and implementation of new educational programming. The Cultural Interpreter will use object-based learning, inquiry-based learning to explore Indigenous art, history, culture and residential schools. The chosen candidate will work within the policies and procedures established by the Woodland Cultural Centre.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The Cultural Interpreter will lead guided tours of the Woodland Cultural Centre and the Mohawk Institute.
- Present interpretive programs, activities, workshops and other cultural events that will promote an understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture.
- Demonstrate the highest standards of excellence in the practice, presentation and interpretation of programs, activities, workshops and other programs offered by the Woodland Cultural Centre.
- Will be responsible for preparing supplies for workshops, educational programs; inventorying and resupply of education kits as needed.
- Maintaining a clean and safe working environment
- Contributes to improving the Centre’s cultural resources and educational programs, projects, and procedures with practical ideas, creativity and innovation.
- Must be dependable and exercise good judgement
- Comply with all WCC’s policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Ability to coordinate, control and organize multiple functions and activities.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and problem-solving abilities.
- Time Management skills, the ability to establish priorities, meet deadlines efficiently and within stated timelines.
- To work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team, to accomplish the organization’s goals and objectives.
- Must have pleasant, courteous, professional manner and interact positively with others.
- The ability to communicate clearly, effectively both verbally and in writing in order to collect, exchange, and provide information in an accurate and timely manner.
- The ability to sit, stand and or walk for extended periods of time.
- Have or willing to obtain a vulnerable sector check.
Education
- Certification, diploma and/or degree in Museum Studies, Museum Education, Indigenous Studies, Indigenous Art History and/or related fields of study or minimum 2 years demonstrated work experience.
- Have an understanding/knowledge of Indigenous/Haudenosaunee culture.
Experience
- One to three years experience in a museum and/or educational setting.
- An understanding of the functions of a museum, its methodologies and practices.
- Experience in the field of Interpretive theory; techniques such as object-based learning, inquiry-based learning, storytelling, demonstration and guided tours.
- Knowledge of contemporary Indigenous art, history, culture and Residential schools.
- Knowledge of Indigenous language is an asset; not a requirement.
Impact of Error
Error in judgement may lead to loss of credibility, poor public relations, public confidence and misinformation resulting in embarrassment and potential liability to the Woodland Cultural Centre.
