Indigenous Art 2021 Artist, Gerrod Craig General
Welcome to Woodland Cultural Centre’s Indigenous Art 2021 Exhibition.
Established in 1975, this is one of the longest running multi-media exhibitions that provide artists an opportunity to exhibit and sell their work in a fine art gallery setting. WCC is pleased to announce the return of this annual Juried Exhibition and we can’t wait to share the selected works with the public. Indigenous Art 2021 will be running September 11 – November 20, 2021.
Meet Artist, Gerrod Craig General
I am Gerrod Craig General is a Native Artist of the Seneca Nation of the Six Nations of the Grand River and I have been doing art throughout my life. I am currently working as a maintenance worker for Ogwa Deni deo here on Six Nations and have worked throughout the current crisis so I have been pretty stretched for artwork time but managed to keep going. I work in pen renderings, mixed medium, acrylic, and pastels (nothing completed yet). My artwork centers around myth, fantasy and darker themed material and dreams and sometimes just pure imagery. I tend to look at things and see imagery in the negative space of things… even in my completed artworks. Almost like a Rorschach.
My influences come from cultural beliefs, dreams, ghost stories, horror/pop culture as well as the works of Production artists such as William Stout and comic artist legends Bernie Wrightson, John Byrne, and horror comics (favourites when I was younger).
I have done a variety of projects such as C.D and albums re-issue cover artwork, Political cartoons and have been working on a series of artwork with imagery derived from a plain white porcelain tile with a crack in it as well as a series of dual images of the subject or source of inspiration with totally different outcomes. I also have plans to start a series of horror graphic novels.
