The Woodland Cultural Centre gift shop still has some bath bombs in stock from Roots + Raven! Time to pamper yourself and enjoy some relaxing self care time. ⁠Roots + Raven is a creative goods small business that was started by Tanya Gluvakov of Six Nations of the Grand River. Using elements of nature and interconnection, Tanya has found great knowledge and peace amongst plant kin. She still uses the knowledge she acquired growing up from her grandmother and other members of the community in her adult life and she wishes to share this knowledge with others. Certain elements such as cedar, sage and sweetgrass are woven into Roots + Raven products to share the medicines that they bring.⁠⁠Roots + Raven also grow and harvest many of their own organic herbs and medicines. Join us on May 30th from 5:00-8:00pm at Mohawk Park for an exciting Community Socials event in collaboration with Brantford Native Housing, De dwa da dehs nye>s Aboriginal Health Centre, and BRISC!

Thanks to the overwhelming support from our community, we've had to relocate to a larger venue to accommodate everyone. Come join us for a night filled with art, dancing, singing, drumming, and delicious food.

Happy #MayisMuseumMonth

May is Museum Month/Mai, Mois des Musées is an annual program run by the Ontario Museum Association celebrating the contributions of Ontario’s over 700 museums, 37,000 volunteers and 11,000 workers.

It coincides with International Museum Day, on May 18th, organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to showcase the impact that museums have on their communities. With this year’s theme being “museums for education and research”, we are encouraging individuals across Ontario to consider the vital contributions museums make as spaces of cultural understanding, learning and innovation.

If you haven't already, this month would be a great opportunity to come visit us at the Woodland Cultural Centre!

The Woodland Cultural Centre opened in 1972, following the closure of the former Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School in 1970, under the direction of the Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians. At the time, the Centre was known as the Woodland Indian Cultural Education Centre; the name was changed to Woodland Cultural Centre in 1988. Initially the Centre focused on collecting research and artifacts to establish its Library, Archives and Museum. The importance and significance of the Arts were incorporated and celebrated in the WCC starting in 1975. The Centre continued to grow with the establishment of the Education department in 1983, and the Language department following soon after in 1984. Woodland Cultural Centre has consistently maintained its status as a leader and innovator in Indigenous operated spaces throughout its history.

Getting ready for spring time! Sit at home with your kids and learn to sing a spring time song with them. Maybe take this time to create visuals for your little ones to go along with the song and let them be a part of the creation.

Our Language Centre is dedicated to strengthening, revitalizing, and maintaining First Nations Languages, locally, regionally, and nationally. The Language Department has been instrumental in a massive effort to revitalize languages at all levels in the community, including immersion schools and grassroots language programs in our support communities, and across the Hodinohsho:ni Confederacy.
